- Part 1: Software Installation Information
- ===========================================================================

- Installation From Disks
- -----------------------
- Before installing File DeFender you should make backup copies of all the
- distribution disks. Do not write-protect the distribution disks you use
- to install File Defender. If you do, File Defender cannot be successfully
- installed.
-
- Also ensure that the Windows directory, including drive letter, is in your
- PATH. If the drive letter is not included in your PATH statement, File
- Defender will be unable to determine where Windows resides.
-
- SETUP.EXE is a Windows application; that is, it is run from Windows, rather
- than from the DOS prompt. SETUP.EXE will only run in Windows Standard or
- Enhanced mode. SETUP.EXE will NOT RUN in Real mode. You can determine how Windows
- is configured on your computer by choosing About from the Help menu in the
- Program Manager.

- To install File Defender, use Program Manager or File Manager to start
- SETUP.EXE as you would any other Windows application. For example, if
- you are installing from A:

- 1. Insert File Defender disk in drive a:
-
- 1. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
-
- 2. In the Run dialog box, type A:SETUP and choose OK.
-
- 3. Follow the instructions on the screen to enter the directory
- to install File Defender.
-
- 4. Select the Continue button.
-
- 5. A dialog box will appear when installation is complete.
-

- SETUP.EXE will install the following files to the File Defender directory
- ('FD' by default):
-
- 1. FD.EXE - The File Defender Workfile Manager is a utility
- program that provides all of the commands which
- allow build, edit, open, save File Defender
- Workfiles and File Defender Errorfiles, as well as
- provide a launching platform for the companion
- program FDefend.

- 2. FDEFEND.EXE - FDefend is the utility program that performs all
- of the protection functions (checksums, etc) on
- File Defender Workfiles, as well as create File
- Defender Errorfiles.

- 3. FDSCHED.EXE - The File Defender Scheduler is a versatile
- scheduling utility used to launch FDefend at a
- specified time completely unattended. The
- schedulers versatility allows it to be used with
- any Windows program or Non-Windows Application and
- can can be configured to run programs by certain
- intervals, certain days or one time only.

- 4. FDREG.EXE - The File Defender registration program is used to
- register your copy of File Defender. Once you are
- registered this program can be erased from your
- system.

- 5. DEFENDER.HLP - The help File for File Defender.
-
- 6. FDSCHED.HLP - The help File for File Defender Scheduler.

- 7. FDSCHED.LST - The File Defender Scheduler data file.

- SETUP.EXE will install the following files to the Windows directory:

- 1. DEFENDER.INI - Inifile for File Defender Programs.

- 2. VBRUN100.DLL - Visual Basic 1.0 Run Time Library.

- Installation From Downloaded Compressed File

- At the DOS prompt:

- 1. Uncompress DEFENDER.ZIP using PKUNZIP DEFENDER. Decompression
- should produce the following files in the current directory:

- FD.EXE - The File Defender Workfile Manager.
- FDEFEND.EXE - FDefend is the utility program that performs all
- of the protection functions.
- FDSCHED.EXE - The File Defender Scheduler.
- FDREG.EXE - The File Defender registration program.
- DEFENDER.HLP - The help File for File Defender.
- FDSCHED.HLP - The help File for File Defender Scheduler.

- PLEASE NOTE: You must have the Visual Basic Runtime Library
- (VBRUN100.DLL) installed in your Windows directory to run
- the File Defender Scheduling program. File Defender Manager and
- Checker will work without VBRUN100.DLL.

- 2. Type INSTALL d: [windows directory] [/D]

- Where:

- d: is the drive to install File Defender

- Optional

- [windows directory] is an optional parameter to supply if
- Windows is found under a subdirectory other than the default
- directory of WINDOWS.

- [/D] is delete files in the current directory after successful
- installation.

- 3. Start Windows, click on the Control Menu Box and select New and
- Program Group. Type in FILEDEFE.GRP and click on OK.

- Using File Defender

- To use File Defender effectively:

- 1. Select and save files using the File Defender Workfile manager.

- 2. Use the File Defender scheduler to run FDefend (FDEFEND.EXE)
- with files saved in step 1.

- File Defender and its uses.

- Instructions to Register File Defender via COMPUSERVE
- -----------------------------------------------------

- If you are a member of COMPUSERVE you may register File Defender online.
-
- To begin, select "Register Shareware" from the menu. A list
- of search criteria will be displayed to you. Enter 565 under
- option #1 on the search criteria menu. You will then navigate
- directly to File Defender's description.
-
- You will then be prompted "Would You Like to Register? (Y/N)."
-
- Read the description carefully to verify that you wish to register
- the program. The description details the program, its capabilities,
- and the benefits of registration. Be sure to note the program's
- registration fee. When you register any program, the registration fee
- is charged to your CompuServe account.
-
- Enter "Y" at the prompt to register; enter "N" at the prompt to
- ensure that you do not register the program, and to return to the
- previous menu. When you enter "Y" to register, you will be prompted
- to enter your full name, company name (optional), your complete
- address, your phone number (optional) and the total number of copies
- of File Defender that you wish to register. When you finish entering
- this information, you can VIEW, CHANGE, SEND or CANCEL it.

- Part 4: Evaluation Agreement
- ============================================================================
- File Defender is not and has never been public domain software, nor is it
- free software. Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use
- File Defender on a 15-day trial basis for the purpose of determining whether
- File Defender is suitable for their needs. The use of File Defender, except
- for the initial 15-day trial, requires registration. The use of unlicensed
- copies of File Defender by any person, business, corporation, government
- agency or any other entity is strictly prohibited. A single user license
- permits a user to use File Defender only on a single computer at a time.

- No one may modify or patch the File Defender executable files in any way,
- including but not limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
- reverse engineering the program.

- A limited license is granted to copy and distribute File Defender only
- for the trial use of others, subject to the above limitations, and also
- the following:
-
- 1. File Defender must be copied in unmodified form, complete
- with the file containing this license information.
-
- 2. File Defender may not be distributed in conjunction with
- any other product without a specific license to do so from
- B&S Graphical Computer Systems.

- 3. No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
- accepted, except as authorized below:

- A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
- may make File Defender available for downloading as long
- as the above conditions are met. An overall or time-
- dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board system
- is permitted as long as there is not a specific charge for
- the download of File Defender.

- B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved
- by the ASP may distribute File Defender, subject to the
- above conditions, without specific permission. Non-approved
- vendors may distribute File Defender only after obtaining
- written permission from B&S Graphical Computer Systems.
- Such permission is usually granted. Vendors may charge a
- reasonable disk duplication and handling fee.

- Part 5: Warranties and Disclaimer
- ===========================================================================

- LIMITED WARRANTY
- ----------------
- B&S Graphical Computer Systems guarantees your satisfaction with this
- product for a period of 90 days from the date of original purchase.
- If you are unsatisfied with File Defender within that time period,
- return the package in saleable condition to the place of purchase
- for a full refund. B&S Graphical Computer Systems warrants that
- all disks provided are free from defects in material and workmanship,
- assuming normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase.

- B&S Graphical Computer Systems warrants that the program will perform
- in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied with the
- software product. If a significant defect in the product is found,
- the Purchaser may return the product for a refund. In no event will
- such a refund exceed the purchase price of the product.

- EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, B&S GRAPHICAL COMPUTER SYSTEMS DISCLAIMS
- ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED
- TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
- PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT. SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE

- SYSTEMS HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. THIS
- LIMITED WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS.
